Just Before Dawn (1981) (Rob Cr.)

This movie holds the middle between ‘Deliverance’ and ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and it is an unknown and pretty good naturalistic backwoods slasher. Director Jeff Lieberman uses the genre cliches with dedication when the genre conventions were still fresh. Some good characterisation, creepy atmosphere and a damn great ending. Director Jeff Lieberman is one of the unsung heroes of genre filmmaking. From the 70’s through 80’s he made a couple of gems in different genres. Squirm (1976) an eco-horror flick, Blue Sunshine (1977) a conspiracy thriller and Remote Control (1988) a scifi comedy inspired by 50’s scifi movies. Lieberman tried another stab at horror with the odd and quirky Satan’s Little Helper (2004).
